The Pier is the Cooling Water Intake Access Structure that was constructed in 1959 for Hunterston 'A' Power Station. It was extended in 1976 with the addition of the ‘B’ Station Headworks.

Between 1998 and 2014 the deck and piles of the concrete structre was strengthened due to the seawater ingressing into it and causing weakness.
