Royal Visit
In 1979 the castle got a royal visit. The Queen Mother was visiting the British Steel site to officially open it, and during this time she visted the castle and received an ancient silver penny as rent for the land.
The silver penny was minted in the reign of King Alexander III of Scotland (1269-86).
The area opposite the walled garden was used, it is famous for its blanket of bluebells. A small tented area was created and many school children was invited including me but I had the day off and also a front row view.
