The Old Road starts at the Castle Gate and finishes at the beginning of Largs Avenue. This is an old dirt track and was the original coach road prior to the A78 being built.

This road is single track and passes along side the Big Wood. In emergencies during the 1970s and 80s when the A78 was blocked the police sometimes diverted the traffic though Hunterston along the old road.
