The Coal loader is a large Blue structure on the railway line below Biglees Hill. This structure was built so the Iron Ore and Coal that was transported by ships could be loaded onto trains and taken to the Ravencraig Steel works.

The Iron Ore and Coal was transported to the loader by conveyor belts and crosses the main A78 road by a large covered belt into the top of the loader. One side of the loader was used for Iron Ore and the other side was for coal.

When Ravencraig closed only coal was transpored to Hunterston by ship and the loader only had one purpose and that was for loading coal onto the waggons
