In 1969 there was a proposal to build a Oil Refinery between Portencross and the Hunterston Roundabout. This was refused planning permission and British Steel got to build their terminal instead.

This would have dramatically changed the whole of the Hunterston area and spoilt the scenery of the River Clyde. On the next 6 pages I will go into detail as to what was proposed.

The image below is what the refinery could have looked like if it was ever built but would have been about three times as big.
