Engine Shed
The engine shed faces south on the North buildings complex. Back in the early 1900s there was an engine in this shed and this is where it gets its name. It would have operated the sawmill next door and on the floor of the shed were some concrete raised off the floor, this would have supported the dynamo, engine and the flywheel and been powered by the battery cells in the Battery shed which would have been recharged by the dynamo.
In the 1950s the engine was replaced and a very powerful hand started engine and located just inside the current door. Despite being 40 years old was still in very good condition in the 1990s and was powered by diesel oil with its own tank located undergound outside the main door.
Since the fire of North cottage the engine shed was mainly used for storage and the engine never used again. It is unclear what happened to the diesel engine in latter years.
